The Edensville High Series: Adam Book #1 Page 8
Chapter Three
Day of Regret
The alarm on Adam’s phone went off at 6:00. He had forgotten to take it off for the weekend. He rolled over and grabbed the phone angrily and silenced it. He lay there for only a moment longer before the stupidity from the night before came rushing back in. Nothing happened.....NOTHING HAPPENED! Mentally he screamed at himself to stop. Nothing had happened and his dad’s precious F450 was sitting in the garage as he had left it all safe and sound. Adam rubbed his face and shook himself visibly before tossing back the comforter and pushing himself out of bed.
He didn’t get far. He turned and tossed the comforter back up toward the top making the bed quickly, or his version of making it anyway. He and his mom had an understanding. She knew that he was never going to make his bed properly because his theory was that he was just going to be getting back in it anyway. However, if he at least tried to keep his room neat by making the bed then she would lay his washed and folded clothes on it, he would put them away and she would stay out of his room and not snoop. That he could abide by. Like most teenage guys his age he had personal things in his room he didn’t want his mom to see and she agreed. As long as he didn’t give her a reason to go through his room then she wouldn’t. So far it had all worked out for them both, even with her gone for the weekend he still held up his end of the bargain or was it just a habit?
Adam made his way downstairs to get some breakfast and that’s where he piled up on the couch with a large bowl of Cap’n Crunch when a familiar knock on the door to the family room disturbed the quiet. An instinctive glance over his shoulder revealed David peeking through the French doors. Adam scrambled to the door and turned off the alarm before opening it to his own personal friendly neighborhood peeping tom.
“Dude, what are you doing here so early, it’s barely after 6:00.” He drilled David with questions as he opened the door wide enough for him to slip through. “Are you just now getting home? No, wait this is my home, have you even been to yours since last night?” Adam closed the door and just looked at David with his head down and his hands stuck in his pockets waiting on him to answer. David shook his head. “Dude, you are in so much trouble, your mom is going to have a conniption fit!”
David shrugged and admitted honestly as he drug his left hand out of his pocket and pointed at Adam. “Why would she...... I mean, she thinks I stayed the night with you, remember?” Then the realization hit Adam. He was going to be David’s alibi. Adam left him standing by the French doors and went back to his cereal, switched the channel on the TV to SpongeBob and ate the rest of his cereal. David followed.
“I.....uh.... texted you last night.” David began.
“I know.” Adam responded rather flippantly as his friend took a seat on the chaise lounge.
“Dude, you should have been there…..it was killer!” David could hardly contain his excitement.
“Yeah, I could tell.” Adam was being glib. He remembered the pictures on Instagram, Twitter and even a video on Vine. Yeah he had all the proof of what David did last night.
“Lucian is….” His best friend began.
Adam cut his eyes at him. “How do you expect to get away with last night?”
“Huh? Get away with what?” David was caught off guard.
“Dude, you posted those pictures all over social media! Your mom is going to see them because your brothers are going to show them to her, you know how they are.”
“I deleted them this morning when I got back to the school. All of them.”
Adam took another bite of cereal, chewed and swallowed hard before answering. “So what you are hoping is that they’re gone before anyone in your mom’s circle of friends or family had a chance to see them?”
David shook his head and raised his eyebrows. “Yeah, I can hope.”
“Dude, you have seven brothers!” Adam drug out the word seven as he questioned. “I mean come on, really?”
David lowered his head and laughed. “I know I’m up shizz creek….” He looked down at the floor. Adam wasn’t mad at his best friend. He was mad at himself for not having the courage that his best friend had had last night and stay at the game in the first place. David was a great guy and always did what his parents wanted him to. He was just a bit more adventurous than Adam and Adam was more than a little envious of that.
“Alright, but just let your mom know that you're helping me today. That way when she talks to my mom and my mom says you didn’t spend the night we can at least say you came after the game. Which isn’t a lie, you just didn’t come right after the game.”
David seemed to shrug with his whole body. “Yeah sure, whatever….so..uh…can I get some of that?” He motioned toward the bowl of cereal Adam was eating. Adam nodded and motioned toward the kitchen with his spoon and David took off to get his own. After a few more mouthfuls of cereal Adam ventured to ask what had been gnawing at him since he saw the photos.
“So…uh…was Eve there with Lucian?”
David paused for a moment not wanting to hurt his best friend's feelings. He knew how he felt about Eve St. Clair. “Uh…well yeah kinda….” He shoved a mouthful of cereal into his mouth and spoke around it. “…. but I don’t think she likes him as much as she does the Camaro.” He lifted his giant bowl of Cap’n Crunch and went back to the chaise lounge to sit.
“Really? Why would you say that, she’s not superficial?” Adam defended.
David shoved another spoonful of cereal into his mouth making Adam wait for an answer until he swallowed it and lifted another spoonful to his lips before stating. “No? Well all she wants to know is who was in that big red truck last night. Like that’s all she wanted to talk about.”
Adam came upright on the couch nearly spilling the milk in the bowl. “You didn’t tell her did you?!”
David shook his head and frowned. “No, I didn’t tell her, but I should have. She would’ve been out with you instead of with Lucian Black last night had you just stayed!”
Adam scoffed. “You are so full of it!” He grabbed a pillow and threw it at him. The two finished their cereal in silence while watching SpongeBob before getting ready and heading out to do the list of chores on Adam's dad’s list.
